Helping Hands in the Garden
is a central Ohio based organization dedicated to assisting breast cancer patients with their gardens.
About Us
Created in 2009, Helping Hands in the Garden gives support to people receiving treatment for breast cancer in the central Ohio area by assisting them with the care and maintenance of their gardens. Cancer patients have many concerns - they and their families do not need to worry about their gardens when there are dedicated volunteers willing to lend a hand. With over 50 volunteers, we have assisted 50 families with their gardens since 2009. While under the watchful eyes of our clients, we have planted annuals, vegetables, perennials, a few shrubs, one tree, pulled a plethora of weeds, mulched, and pruned the largesst barberry I have ever seen.
Our volunteers include a team of dedicated landscape industry leaders working with landscape students, landscape alumni, high school students, garden club members, people who love to weed, and cancer survivors. We have been richly rewarded by our experiences and even bagels and coffee from our clients.
Gardening is what I love to do and to be able to share with others has been a gift. Having help in my gardens whle receiving treatment for breast cancer was truly a gift - seems only right to share that gift and 'pay it forward' to the community through gardening.
While doing research about organizations offering services to cancer patients, I discovered Cleaning for a Reason. Located in Texas, several house cleaning companies realized there was a need for their services among breast cancer patients. Their services are provided free of charge to the patients. This organization now has 370 companies throughout the United States, including Columbus, Ohio, with inquiries daily from within the United States as well as other countries.
From my own experience and with inspiration from Cleaning for a Reason, Helping Hands in the Garden was formed.
Most sincerely,
